Exercise 23: Software Ethics (part 2)

Objective:

To identify and list ACM Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct violations for a real-world medical device which relies on software.

The real-world incident:

Please read the IEEE Spectrum article, "Their Bionic Eyes Are Now Obsolete and Unsupported: Second Sight left users of its retinal implants in the dark" by Eliza Strickland and Mark Harris.

Exercise:

Utilizing the ACM Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct, identify as many code violations as possible in the scenario listed above. For each ACM code violation include the following:

  • The ACM Code of Ethics rule being violated. For example, if someone in the scenario above is found to be dishonest or untrustworthy, please write, "ACM code 1.3" is violated.
  • Explain why you believe the ACM code of ethics rule was violated in the scenario above (i.e. justify your answer).

  • This is team exercise.
  • Please list the names of each team member who worked on this exercise. Only one student from the team needs to submit the assignment to Canvas. All members whose names are listed on the exercise will receive credit.
